Police warns Facebook impostors of imprisonment up to 12 years

Impostors, through dummy accounts, on Facebook could be imprisoned for up to 12 years, police said Monday.

This came after several reports of blank and duplicate accounts bearing the names of university students and members of the academe vocal against the government.

Social media users proven guilty can be charged with identity theft if they use a person’s first 2 given names and other personal information and photos, said Anti-Cybercrime Group spokesperson Col. Robin Gammade.

The police unit is preparing a proposal for how targets of the dummy accounts can report these to the police electronically.

The reports followed protests against an anti-terror bill pushed by President Rodrigo Duterte and which critics said could lead to human rights abuses.
