One of the first things the new chief of the Philippine National Police will do is evaluate the current implementation and strategy of the anti-drug campaign of the administration.
Newly-appointed Police General Camilo Cascolan said he will prioritize the improvement of protocols for the government’s war on drugs in his expected two-month tenure as the next police chief.
Among other things, Cascolan may form a technical working group that will look into the current strategy and fill in gaps in the anti-drug campaign, specifically the outcry from human rights advocates in the country and abroad.
“The strategy on the war on drugs was (formulated) last 2016. This needs to be evaluated now,” Cascolan stressed.
Still, he echoed President Rodrigo Duterte’s views that illegal drugs remain to be the Philippines’ top problem.
“The main problem of our society today is drugs. I wish that I would be able to evaluate it properly, come up with a contingency plan, and come up with a new phase of the anti-drug war,” he said.
Aside from proposed improvements in the anti-drug campaign, Cascolan also disclosed his other priorities as he takes the lead in PNP such as internal cleansing of the ranks, as well as boosting the morale and discipline and protecting the welfare of his personnel.
