Romualdez: Pass 2021 budget before tackling speakership row

The heated Speakership tussle at the House of Representatives will only be addressed once the chamber passes the proposed 2021 national budget, House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez said.

“The budget before politics… Politics such as the Speakership issue will be tackled after the passage of the national budget to assure a smooth transition,” Romualdez said in a statement.

Moreover, the House has a goal of approving the budget on third and final reading by October 16, according to Romualdez.

Under the term-sharing agreement brokered by President Rodrigo Duterte himself, incumbent House speaker Alan Peter Cayetano will be leading the lower chamber by 15 months then he will be turning over the reins to Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, who will then be leading for the remaining 21 months.

For the past weeks, the two congressmen and their allies have been putting on a show on what should be done with regard to the agreement.
