A senator wants Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade to face the upper chamber to “answer for the lamentable experience of motorists” passing through toll booths using an “ill-studied” cashless payment system.
Sen. Grace Poe is pertaining to the radio-frequency identification (RFID) system which has caused substantial disturbance to motorists due to the issues faced during its implementation.
Tugade needs to appear before senators to explain why the DOTr forced toll operators to implement a full cashless transaction system which is proven to be ineffective.
“We are asking the DOTr to suspend the full implementation of the 100-percent cashless transaction it compelled toll operators,” Poe, chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation, said in a statement.
“The system isn’t completely ready,” she added.
Long queues in toll plazas for the installation of RFID stickers and frequent failure of devices in toll booths in reading the stickers are just some of the problems being encountered by Filipino motorists.
