UST flood-control project expected to be done by mid-2021

Students of the University of Santo Tomas will soon experience a flood-free campus as its drainage project nears completion, estimated to be finished by mid-2021.

“We are hoping that this would be completed by next year, middle of next year, so we could at least experience what it is to be a flood-free campus whenever there is a typhoon or even a little rain that we could accommodate inside the campus.” Rev. Fr. Dexter Austria, director of the UST Facilities Management Office, said in an interview.

“It has been a nightmare for all of us here, that prompted us to have this drainage improvement system because it would not only bring benefit inside the campus but also benefit other communities as well.”

Austria added that in terms of volume, UST’s drainage system will be able to accommodate rThe university’s new drainage system will reportedly be able to accommodate rainwater of about “four and a half Olympic-sized swimming pools.”

The university’s website noted that the project covers seven zones. These are the following:

Zone A – Araullo Drive (facing the Quadricentennial Pavilion, España side) and Roque Ruaño Drive (facing the Roque Ruaño and Albertus Magnus Buildings)

Zone B – Arellano Drive (facing the Parade Grounds, España side) and Tamayo Drive (facing the Beato Angelico and Buenaventura G. Paredes, O.P. Buildings)

Zone C – Osmeña Drive (in between the Parade Grounds and Benavides Garden)

Zone D – Quezon Drive (in between the Benavides Garden and Multi-Deck Carpark and Quadricentennial Pavilion)

Zone E – Leon Ma. Guerrero Drive (in between the Multi-Deck Carpark and Health Service) and Ceferino Gonzales Alley Drive (in front of the Santísimo Rosario Parish Church)

Zone F – Ceferino Gonzales Drive (driveway leading to the A.H. Lacson Gate) and Intramuros Drive (fronting the Arch of the Centuries)

Zone G – Leon Maria Guerrero Drive (fronting the Hospital)

House committees to hold hearings during break
