Fresh from his city government’s dispute with NLEx Corp.’s on the inefficiency of tollway cashless payment scheme, Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian threw a simple reminder to private firms to fulfill their duties properly.

Gatchalian stressed that business permits granted to companies by local governments are not a right but a privilege.

“[M]ay kaakibat yan na mga responsibilidad at isa doon, at pinaka-importante dun, ay pangalagaan mo yung kapakanan ng publiko sa pamamagitan ng pagbigay ng maayos at de-kalidad na serbisyo,” he explained.

Toll fees are waived at NLEX toll booths in Valenzuela City after Mayor Rex Gatchalian suspended the business permit of the company following their ‘unsatisfactory’ actions in fixing the RFID causing terrible traffic in the city.

Suspension of their business permit means NLEX is not authorized to collect toll fees in any of the toll booths within Valenzuela.

Gatchalian eventually ordered the conditional lifting of the corporation’s permit suspension after an agreement between both parties on fee collection policies.

The mayor also extended his gratitude to President Rodrigo Duterte for “understanding” his administration’s action to the RFID fiasco and supporting the autonomy of LGUs through his remarks on the issue during his recent public address.
