After a fire broke out in its premises on Sunday morning, the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) says it is hoping to resume operations this week.

“I was talking to the director this morning and hopefully hindi naman masyado matagal ang suspension,” said PGH spokesperson Dr. Jonas Del Rosario when asked about the schedule of suspended surgeries. “Maybe for the next 24 to 48 hours, we should be able to resume operations.”

Aside from being a surgery-centered hospital, the PGH is also a major COVID-19 referral institution in the country.

Del Rosario confirmed that the sterilization area, which has the items PGH uses for its surgical operations like instruments, linens and machines, was where the fire started. The full extent of damage to the hospital is still being evaluated.

Ang maganda [The good thing] is the rooms are okay, they are intact,” the PGH official added.

The PGH has also sought permission from the government to suspend its emergency room services “at least for today” so patients can be accepted again “hopefully by tomorrow.”
