“When I first read about it, the question I asked myself was, ‘why now?’ Why now that all hands must be on deck to address the pandemic.”

This was Vice President Leni Robredo’s response to reports about the proposed bill in the House of Representatives wanting to rename the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Pilipinas.

“We are in the middle of a pandemic, and this is what we’re thinking of,” Robredo stressed.

“Number one, it’s ill-timed. Number two, we all know why it was named Ninoy Aquino International Airport. So my question is, where is our sense of history?” she added.

Presidential son, Deputy Speaker and Davao City Representative Paolo Duterte and two other lawmakers have filed this bill seeking to rename NAIA.

Authors of the said bill said that with the proposed name, “the airport will easily be identified as the international doorway of the country, in view of it being in Filipino language and branding it as the international airport of the Philippines.”
