President Rodrigo Duterte will not attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit of leaders of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta this weekend, the presidential spokesman announced on Thursday.

“Ang Presidente po, hindi personally mag-a-attend. But I’m sure, that our Department of Foreign Affairs will be there,” Spokesman Harry Roque said in a press briefing, without disclosing the reason of the president’s non-attendance.

According to a Reuters report, United Nations special envoy Christine Schraner Burgener will go to Jakarta on Thursday to meet senior members of Southeast Asian governments to discuss possible ways to restore stability in Myanmar.

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been trying to guide Myanmar, a member, out of the bloody turmoil triggered by the military overthrow of Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government on Feb. 1.
